Mutual fund FAQs
How should I start choosing a mutual fund?

Start from what you are trying to do rather than from a list of funds. Parking money for a few weeks, compounding for ten years, and saving tax are different problems with different fund types — and the numbers are not comparable across them. The groups on this page separate those questions.

Why do you not show one single list of top funds?

Because a single ranking mixes things that cannot be compared. A gold fund-of-fund tracking a metal price and a large-cap equity fund will sit next to each other with wildly different returns, and neither number tells you anything about the other. Each group here is ranked on the measure that actually matters for it.

How many mutual funds are there in India?

There are roughly 1,700 open-ended fund variants available as Direct-plan Growth options, spread across SEBI’s equity, debt, hybrid, solution-oriented and other categories. Counting every plan and option variant separately gives a much larger number, because one fund can have Direct/Regular and Growth/IDCW versions.
